Why does the very religious US have much higher rates of abortion & teen pregnancy than less religious Europe?

Question by Icarus62: Why does the very religious US have much higher rates of abortion & teen pregnancy than less religious Europe?
Is it because less religion makes for a better and more enlightened society?
sexy_jim_darwin: Yeah, that certainly sounds plausible.
chicocabill: I think you’ll find that regardless of worthy efforts to keep religion out of civil affairs (which is as it should be), the US still has a much higher proportion of religious observance than most European countries.

Best answer:

Answer by sexy_jim_darwin
no, america has a lot of poverty as a result of democrats and republicans not making headway on solving the problem and women in poverty don’t want to have children so they eliminate the fetus

maybe im wrong i dunno

Canadian and American teen pregnancy rates?

Question by LoveToPieces: Canadian and American teen pregnancy rates?
Why is there such a difference in them? Canada’s rate fell 36.9 percent in 8 years while America’s rate is increasing.

“In comparison to the United States, we tend to have a more balanced, sensible approach to adolescent sexual health. Generally speaking what you find is that the more a society has an accepting attitude toward the reality of adolescent sexuality, the lower the teen pregnancy rate is. Canadians tend to have a more relaxed attitude towards adolescent sexuality than people in the United States.”

That’s a paragraph from an article on the subject so is it the abstinence teaching in America that’s causing such high teen pregnancy rates?

Are the adults in America really so closed minded when it comes to teenagers having sex and prefer to turn a blind eye?
Brittany – No this is only about teenage pregnancy. I’m not saying the amount of sexually active teens decreased.

Definitely. That article has it all down.

Abstinence only programs don’t work. In fact their so called effectiveness is calculated on the number of teens who take “the pledge”, the promise to not have sex before marriage. In reality studies have found that the proportion of teenagers who have sex is the exact same among teenagers who have taken the pledge and among teenagers who haven’t! Worse still, teenagers who have taken the pledge are more likely to have unprotected sex than those who haven’t.

The point is teenagers have always had sex and will always have sex, no matter how much you tell them not to. If you have an open attitude with them, they’re more likely to be educated about sex and to come to you for advice and contraception than if you have told them “not until marriage” all their lives.
And seriously WTF? This is 21st century. Women (cause let’s face it it’s mainly girls that are the target of parental pressure to wait until marriage) don’t get “tainted” by their first sexual experience. They don’t suddenly become a used second hand rag because they didn’t wait for marriage. Maybe their first time was a mistake. So what? Get up and move on. Everyone makes mistakes and a woman’s value is not determined by a stretch of skin between her legs.

Does Britain have high teen pregnancy rates cos of sex ed?

Question by Kitty_Rox: Does Britain have high teen pregnancy rates cos of sex ed?
I heard that in Sweden most 16 year olds detest the thought of having sex and they have next to no sex education. does sex ed help our kids to want to have sex at earlier ages or something, cos we apparently have the highest teen pregnancy rates and STIs in europe!

Best answer:

Answer by nondescript
I find your statistics suspect. The highest STD rates are: Sub-Saharan Africa (119/1000), Latin America & Carribean (70/1000), and South & Southeast Asia (50/1000) . By comparison, North America (19/1000) and Western Europe (20/1000), and the lowest in East Asia & Pacfic (7/1000).

I know the US and Canada both have sex ed classes, and so does most of Europe. It looks like the higher STD rate is in third world countries where sex ed might not be taught as much.
